I met Julia Alvarez at a writer's conference in Boston way back in 1995, in the cafeteria line waiting to get food. I was deeply starstruck, because I loved the book and had read some of her other pieces and I think that was my only real 'fan' moment of the conference. Well that and meeting Edwidge Danticat. Alvarez read portions of Mariposas to the audience, and I was deeply moved by the resonance in her passages. Unfortunately, I have not followed up on her recently and don't know if she's written anything recently. :sigh: She's a wonderful writer and the story is amazing. They made it into a film a few years back. I doubt you'd get it now in the video stores locally, but it was available when it first came out (and before they realised it was an independent 'chick' film).

Think I have seen the DVD on sale/rent. Not the book though - especially not in Spanish. :(
It is a beautiful story though.

I loved this book when I read it a few years back. I was living in Puerto Rico at the time and hoped that I'd travel to the DR but that was not to be sadly.

Sungoddess, I am so jealous that you got to meet Ms. Alvarez (and Edwidge Danticat!); from her postings on her website she sounds like a wonderful warm person.

I am hoping that I get a chance to see the film version of the book sometime soon.
